The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
