RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
